I have a question for you. Who have you given your life to? Don’t be too quick to answer. I know the short and politically correct answer is God. Isn’t that what the bible instructs us to do? Isn’t that what the preacher asks the sinner to do? Give their life to Christ. We say that with our lips, and most times we really believe that. But in reality, quite the opposite is true.
Don’t shoot the messenger. I just want you to think about something. In the movie “The Devil Wears Prada”, Andy (Anne Hathaway) is always taking the calls of her boss Miranda (Meryl Streep), to the annoyance of her boyfriend. Andy goes above and beyond placing her boss over everyone else in her life, including her father. At one point her boyfriend tells her “The person who’s calls you always take is the most important person to you”. We may think that this character is crazy and say to ourselves “I would never do something like that…but do you?
You may not give your life to your boss, but is there someone else in your life that you listen to and value you more than God? Is there someone that you would rather die (maybe die is a little bit dramatic, but you get the picture) than disappoint? Is there someone that you listen to, even though their advice takes you away from God and His will for your life. I’ll take it one step further. Is there someone who has hurt you, and you spend most of your life thinking about them? You constantly think about that person, what they did, how many times, and how bad it was. You can’t go a day without thinking about what you would say to them if given the chance, and you play the video over and over in your head.
If such a person exists in your life, I would argue that you have given your life to that person. Your life doesn’t belong to God. It belongs to ________ (fill in the blank). We like to think that our life is our own, but if someone else is pulling the strings…they own you. It’s a scary thought that someone else could control your life, especially if that person doesn’t even know they’re controlling it!
The next question is, if someone besides God is controlling your life, how do you change that? The first thing you have to do is recognize that, that person has taken the place of God. Second, you repent and ask God for forgiveness for putting that person above Him. Thirdly, you begin to make a conscious effort to remove that person from their number one spot and replace them with God. This is where the hard work begins because we all know that bad habits are hard to break. When that person or thoughts of the person creep in, you have to literally tear them down with God’s word. You have to know that you belong to God and no one else. What does God’s word say:
But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. (Isaiah 43:1)
Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. (Psalm 100:3)
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, (I Corinthians 6:19)
For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. (Romans 14:8)
Today, begin the work of removing that person from their place in your life, and give that place to its rightful owner, who is God. Bottom-line, you belong to God and He will not share you with another. Begin to trust God with your life. He created you and He and only He has the plans for your life. Start today!!
Love you to life!
