A few weeks ago our youth department had a retreat and I attended as a senior member (LOL) and for support. I always have a great time with the kids as it helps to keep me young. We had a wonderful time being outdoors, playing basketball and four square. During one of the outings we had an opportunity to go on the “Giant Swing”.
I contemplated on whether or not I would go on the swing. On the giant swing, you put on a harness and they hook you up to a mechanism that pulls you as high as you want to go up in the trees. The person that hooks up your harness tells you to hold onto a section of the rope. When you are ready or you have gone as high as you want, you are to let go of the rope and you drop down into a giant swing. Sounds easy enough….right??
Me being the daredevil that I am watched as the kids who were brave enough, got on the swing. Most of them screamed and eventually laughed as they finally came to a stop after realizing they weren’t going to die. The kids challenged me to get on the swing. I finally gathered my nerves and said I would do it. I put on the harness and waited while the operator hooked me up and put the rope in my hand. He told me that when I was ready to “let go”. As they began to pull me up into the trees and I went higher and higher, my first thought was “What am I doing? I must be crazy! I’m going to die!” They pulled me as high as it would go. As I looked down I then thought “everybody else lived through this, but the harness is going to break on me and I’m going to die”. I really wanted to be let back down, but the only way for me to get down was to LET GO.
In that split second I knew I had to let go. So, I let go. Let me tell you that when I let go and felt that first drop, I was scared to death! When you swing out, you are actually swinging over a very high cliff and at the bottom is a creek. However, very soon I realized that I wasn’t going to die and began to somewhat enjoy the swing and even laughed. What a ride!
I believe that God is telling someone today to “LET GO”. You’ve held onto whatever it is for so long that your grip is starting to slip, and fear and panic have set it. God wants you to know that He’s got you and He’s not going to let you fall. Trust Him and let go.
Let go of hurt. Let go of unforgiveness. Let go of disappointments. Let go of not feeling good enough. Let go of having to be right. Let go of the rejection. Let go of feeling alone and that you’re by yourself. Let go and allow God to take you on the ride of your life.
If you want to get rid of what’s keeping you up at night…let it go. If you want to be free…let it go. Trust God that He can handle it, because He knows about it anyway. Believe me, there is such a freedom in letting go and resting in God. There’s nothing like it. Try it today and let me know how it feels.
Proverbs 3:5 – Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Love you to life!
