If you’re a sports fan, then you’re aware that Stuart Scott (ESPN Sports Anchor), after a long battle with cancer, died this past Sunday. Stuart was a great anchor and ushered in “Hip-Hop” language and flair to the station. What we think is normal now, in the way the anchors speak and react; was very risky 20 years ago when Stuart was hired. He was loved and respected by athletes and journalists alike.
Last July, Scott received the Jimmy V award for Perseverance at the ESPYS. The ESPYS is an award show where they honor athletes…just in case you didn’t know. Scott delivered a very poignant and inspiring acceptance speech. He was funny, poised, but he also talked about how a few days before the awards ceremony he had been in the hospital for a week, and didn’t know if he would actually make it to the show because he was very ill. But, he pressed on. He also talked about his two daughters (Taelor 19, Sydni 14), who were the reasons why he fought so hard.
During his acceptance speech he made a statement that stuck with me. Scott said “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live”. Wow…just wow.
This statement can be applied to anyone, whether you have cancer or not. All you have to do is replace “cancer”, with whatever your issue is. For example, you beat rejection by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live. You beat unforgiveness by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live. Whatever your struggle or issue is, you beat it by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live. When those issues threaten to overtake you, think about how you’re living and the actions you are taking. Life always happens to us, but it’s how you react to it that matters most. We can choose to fall apart or we can choose to get back up when we‘re knocked down.
I thought about the old commercial for Weeble Wobble’s. If you’re younger than 30, you probably don’t know what they are and you can google it to find out. I’m sure most of you remember the slogan from the commercial….”weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down”. I’ve heard that preached in a lot of sermons in regards to hanging in there. But, we’re not weeble wobbles and sometimes we do fall down. But you don’t have to stay down. Get back up and beat whatever it is by how you live, why you live and manner in which you live.
My question to you is: How you livin’? What are you overcoming by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live? I want to hear from you.
olossians 1:10 – That you may walk (live and conduct yourselves) in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him and desiring to please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing and increasing in and by the knowledge of God [with fuller, deeper, and clearer insight, acquaintance, and recognition].
Love you to life!
