Four Things I Learned at the Gym – #1

Please read #4, #3, and #2, before reading #1

Don’t quit – this one is a little tough for me because I am not a quitter. I will fight to the death. Ask anyone who knows me! When I run around the track, I set goals for myself and will sometimes run an extra time or two around the track, just for good measure. Sometimes, I do extra leg stretches…just because. However, the YMCA has a Rock Wall that you can climb. One evening, I thought I’d give it a try. It’s a lot tougher than you think, and as I began to climb, you have to figure out how to move your foot up into a slot, and reach up at the same time, in order to pull yourself up a little. All the while you are hooked up to a harness so you won’t fall. An employee at the Y is supporting the harness a little, and as you go up, they pull on it to help you go up. The higher I went, the more difficult it became. I began to sweat and started getting a little nervous. The employee kept telling “you’re fine, keep going, you’re almost at the top”. I could see that I was very close to the top. I only had to pull up about two more times. But, I made a fatal mistake, I looked down. When I looked down, I saw how far up I had come and I thought “Oh hell” (that’s what I said, I promise to God). I was doomed. I couldn’t go any further, no matter how much I tried. I only had about a foot to go, but I became so afraid…that I quit. I told the guy to let me down. He continued to say that I only had a little further to go, and really resisted letting me down. But, I couldn’t do it. I was so disappointed and angry at myself. I quit…which is something I don’t do. When I came down, I think the guy that was helping was just as disappointed as I was.

Life is like that Rock Wall. You’re climbing the wall of life and you’re doing fine. But, then you look down. You look at failures, you look at what’s facing you, and you quit. Although you’re almost at the top. Don’t quit. God has your harness and I promise you, he won’t let you fall. He’s there encouraging you every step of the way. You can make it, rest into the hands (harness) of God, and keep climbing. Now, every time I go to the gym, I look at the Rock Wall, and say to myself “I’m going to get you. You will not defeat me a second time”. The next time I go to the gym in the evening, I’m going to climb that Rock Wall, and I promise you….I won’t quit.

Galatians 6:9 – So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit.

Love you to Life!
