You should go natural. You should get a weave. You should go back to school. You should dress differently. You should quit this job. You should apply for that job. You should be a better mother. You should be more like (fill in the blank). You should… you shouldn’t… why don’t you… why can’t you… We’ve all heard these comments at some point in our lives, and boy can they do a number on you.
Recently I talked to a group of Pastor’s wives about defining who they were outside of congregants, family, or church protocol expectations. Being a Pastor’s wife comes with a lot of expectations, and quite a few of them are unrealistic expectations, but that’s another story. The point is that all of us have had people try to define who you are. Whether that person was a family member, society, or church, they are pressing in on and in some cases taking away from who God created you to be.
What I told those Pastor’s wives was that ultimately, only God gets to define who you are because He was the one who created you. Only the maker of a thing can determine the purpose of it.
Therefore, in order to find out your purpose, you have to go to the Maker.
I understand that it’s easier to talk to friends or someone you trust. However, their advice should always point you back to God. If their advice or input comes from “what they see in you”, be very careful. People’s opinion of you can change on a dime and you don’t want your future to be at the whim of person who one day sees your worth, and the next day doesn’t. God will always see the value in you and that will never change. That’s the beauty of going to the Maker because He holds you in high esteem because he made you.
My nightstand is filled with little love notes that Matthew has written to me or little hearts he cut out for me. When he gives those to me, their purpose is to make me happy and smile. He searches my face for the right response. He holds those in high regard because he knew their purpose when he wrote or made it. It’s no different with God. He is waiting for you to seek Him to define you.
Make a point today to begin to seek God. If you ask, He will tell. If you seek, you will find. If you knock, the door will be opened. God is waiting for you to walk through that door. Take the step.
My question: Do you know your purpose? If so, what is it? If not, why not?
Proverbs 19:21 – We may make a lot of plans, but the LORD will do what he has decided.
Proverbs 16:9 – We make our own plans, but the LORD decides where we will go.
Love you to life!
